Therapy vs. Coaching

Therapy vs. Coaching

Somatic Sex Coaching is an experiential form of treatment that offers a more physically interactive and hands on approach in which clients are led through exercises that help them feel safe, and comfortable in their bodies.

Somatic Sex and Relationship Coaching is different than traditional talk therapy in that it does not address mental health difficulties. Coaching is helpful for clients who want to improve their individual lives and/or their relationships. Through sex coaching, clients learn how to identify and address their current challenges. In that process they learn how to communicate effectively, how to create healthy relationships (both sexual and non-sexual), how to set boundaries, and how to process feelings.

Which is right for me?

Therapy

Coaching

  • Looks at the past and how it has impacted the present.
  • Therapy vacillates between past and present.
  • It assists in planning for your future by breaking the cycles and healing traumas to facilitate growth.
  • While coaching initially looks at the past, it primarily focuses on the present and future.
  • It helps you create the future you desire and assists in growing towards those goals.
  • Diagnoses and treats mental health disorders.
  • Mental health disorders can be present but are not the focus of coaching sessions.
  • Clinician–client relationship.
  • Equals. No hierarchy. Coach and client can have dual relationships.
  • Can take years of treatment
  • Typically short term.
  • The therapist sets treatment goals.
  • Sessions are focused on reflection, healing and understanding emotional pain.
  • Solutions and goals are co-created to facilitate change in the thinking process and maximize strengths.
  • A coach helps a client learn from life’s experiences to create solutions to move forward in life’s challenges.
  • Coaching is change, action, and developmental focused.
  • Therapists require licensing and higher levels of education.
  • Pre-licensing therapists must be supervised by a licensed clinician.
  • A majority of coaches are certified and credentialed.
