Trauma-Informed Therapy
At some point in our lives, we are all exposed to some form of trauma. This can look like a natural disaster, abuse, neglect, or an unexpected loss. These experiences can have a lasting impact on one’s health and well-being. Within trauma-informed therapy, the impacts of these traumas are recognized, and therapy is adapted to support healing, empowerment, and recovery.
Trauma-informed therapy combines several key principles that work alongside and complement one another to create a safe, comprehensive, and effective approach through your healing journey.
- Safety – We aim to create environments where individuals feel physically and emotionally safe. This allows individuals to explore their experience at their own pace and feel comfortable and respected.
- Trustworthiness and Transparency – Trust is built through clear communication and consistent actions. We work to build reliable relationships with clients so you may feel comfortable and supported.
- Peer Support – We recognize the value of peer support and community resources. Connecting with others who have similar experiences helps promote healing and resilience and we encourage you to seek connections that align with your treatment goals.
- Collaboration and Mutuality – You are the expert on YOU! Your insights and experiences are essential to the therapeutic process. We collaborate with you to create goals that align with your needs and perspectives.
- Empowerment, Voice, and Choice – We encourage you to have control over your healing journey. We have the honor to walk alongside you through it, but your strengths and preferences are central to the healing process.
- Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues – We recognize and respect diversity through culture, history and gender-related factors. This helps us to understand a client’s background and tailor therapy appropriately.
Trauma informed therapy prioritizes client complexity, social context, and the therapeutic relationship throughout the assessment, diagnostic, and treatment process. In trauma-informed therapy our goal is to help our clients get to a place where they can say:
- The trauma happened to me
- I am aware of my past and how if affects me in the present
- The past is differentiated from the present (it is over now)
- I can be mindful of the present moment
- I can sense and feel my body
- I have choices about my thoughts, emotions, and behaviors
- I can plan for and look toward the future
At Andreya Jones Counseling, we are passionate about creating a safe, supportive, and empowering environment. We approach sessions with commitment and compassion and collaborate with you to honor your experiences and promote long-term resilience as well as reduce the risk of re-traumatization.
All of our practitioners are specifically trained in providing trauma-informed therapy and are required to take continuing education classes on trauma-informed care each year.
